What is FAHR-Face?

FAHR-Face is a face foundation model from researchers at Mass General Brigham and Harvard, published in The Lancet Digital Health. The team pretrained it on more than 40 million unlabeled face photos covering ages 0 to 116, so the model learned how faces change across a lifetime.

From that base the researchers built two tools. FAHR-FaceAge estimates biological age, how old your body looks, rather than the age on your ID. FAHR-FaceSurvival was trained on photos of cancer patients to support doctors in clinical research.

The study found that a face looking five or more years older than its real age was linked to worse health outcomes, and that makeup, lighting and most cosmetic surgery barely moved the estimate. This FAHR-Face age test brings the face age idea to everyone: no clinic, just a selfie.

How the FAHR-Face age test works

Three steps, about thirty seconds.

01

Upload a selfie

Use a front-facing photo with even light. The photo is resized in your browser before upload and deleted right after the analysis.

Where FAHR-Face looks on your face

The research attention maps show which facial areas carry face age and health signals.

Forehead

Horizontal lines and skin texture above the brows, one of the first areas where age shows.

Temples

Volume at the sides of the forehead. Hollow temples add years, and the study saw attention shift here after 40.

Under-eye

Hollowness and dark circles below the eyes, the area the survival model focused on most.

Nose bridge

Sharpness and skin along the nose bridge, another key area in the research attention maps.

Smile lines

Depth of the folds from nose to mouth, a classic sign of collagen loss.

Face age vs real age: why the gap matters

The researchers call the difference between face age and real age the face age deviation. In their patients, looking five or more years older was tied to a 21% higher risk, and looking five or more years younger to a 17% lower risk.

Smoking showed a clear dose effect: current smokers looked older than former smokers, who looked older than people who never smoked. Sleep, sun and stress leave marks too, which is why your report ends with habits you can change.

This age test is for curiosity and self-care. It does not diagnose disease or predict lifespan. Talk to a doctor about any health concern.
